Dumbshit Dept.

Music.com: Sneaky crooks

I'm at SXSW here in Austin this week and one company just came to my attention: Music.com. These scummy folks promote bands online and offer other services to indie artists. However, their Terms of Service have this one little "Oh, by the way... " clause that rips off their customers. See section 8, latter half of the paragraph:

Please note that communication or Materials you transmit or post shall be owned by Music.com and may be used by Music.com or its affiliates for any purpose, including, but not limited to, reproduction, disclosure, transmission, publication, broadcast and posting. Furthermore, Music.com is free to use any ideas, concepts, know how or techniques contained in any communication or Materials you send to the Service for any purpose whatsoever including, but not limited to, developing, manufacturing and marketing any and all products incorporating any such information.

Please note they say. As if this is a little footnote of little importance! MySpace got a load of flak for having the same clause in their ToS, so please if you care about indie artists, get this word about the music.com slimeballs out so that the blogging community can force these guys to change their terms of service! If you're at SXSW, please stop by the Music.com booth and let them know how unacceptable this is!
