Defragment? What's that?

I was reading these laptop battery optimization tips and I came across #9:

Defrag your hard drive. Even once you have turned everything off and got yourself a bare-bones system, you can't avoid using the hard drive. But you can make it more efficient – defrag the drive

I had to stop for a moment -- I hadn't heard or thought of disk fragmentation in years! I think I'm going to go and hug my Linux and Mac boxes...

I see where they're coming from, but it's not quite that simple. Defragging can over time move OS things around to where more total seeking happens. Sure, that video you watch every couple of months might be all contiguous, but does that really matter?

If your data is too big to fit in buffers and you use it frequently, and you have a fragging filesystem, go ahead.
