Music industry watch

Plotting a new music conference

This weekend I had the pleasure of attending O'Reilly's Digi Foo Camp, which brought together a number people who think about, tinker with and explore digital media on the internet. At one point I was sitting with John Buckman from Magnatune and Lucas Gonze of WebJay thinking about how its time to invent a replacement music industry. This new industry would do an end run around the existing dinosaur record labels and put them out to pasture while we embracing P2P and all the new technologies that come along, rather than fighting them.

Thus, we're trying to get all the people who "get it" into one room for a couple of days early next year to see what people are up to and how to organize ourselves into a coherent movement. John blogged about this idea and we're setting the wheels in motion for organizing this invite-only conference. We're thinking of having some formal presentations and some ad-hoc gatherings and BOF sessions. We're planning to keep it very low cost in order to make sure that everyone who is working on cool net music stuff can show up -- even the people who are broke (like me).

What do you think? Do you have any suggestions for who we should invite? Would you be interested in coming? How about making a presentation about what you're doing in this space?

I think this is a great idea. I think representatives from EFF, Collective Commons, several P2P services, maybe folks from places like discogs or allmusic.com would all be beneficial.

I would love to attend something like this, just to hear what people have to say. Unfortunately, I don't know that I would have much to contribute.

I agree with what you say - makes sense to me. Looking for some propecia?
