Gateway closes its stores

Looks like Gateway will close its chain of computer stores. Good riddance!

My friends once told me about walking into a Gateway store and wanting to buy a computer. Essentially the sales person walked them through the process of ordering a computer online from the Gateway web site. To top it off, they had to pay for shipping for the computer AND go to the store and pick it up. So, where was the benefit of the store? Just holding the hands of the customers while they ordered their computers online?

Something didn't compute there and I was wondering how long the stores would stick around. Turns out it was about a year.

Where do these people come up with these business models?
