Open source
AOL lays off 50 Mozilla folks
Looks like AOL is drastically cutting back support for
Mozilla since they just
laid off 50 Netscape employees who were working on Netscape/Mozilla.
This is a direct result of AOL making a deal with M$ to use IE. I doubt this will have much impact on Mozilla for its long term viability, since Firebird is out there and it's just enough of a browser that the OSS community needs. I was never fond of the kitchen sink Mozilla version. Let the open source hackers keep working on the core of the browser and dump all the non-browser crap overboard.
I'm curious to see what Mozilla will look like in a few years without the AOL evil pulling strings. The Mozilla Foundation will ensure that the code stays out there and available for the community to use. This may even be a blessing in disguise -- who knows?
