Music industry watch

RIAA spins itself a crisis

I leave town to attend the Creative Commons launch party and all kinds of interesting things happen in the world. Go figure.

First off is the MacWizards Music piece about the RIAA figures not adding up. Looks like the RIAA employs creative number skewing to make it appear that they are getting fleeced by pirates.

When will they clue in that the net will figure out all the shenanigans they try to pull?

The most interesting piece in that article is at the bottom where George Ziemann proposes Independents' Day next July 4th. Indepedents' Day invites indepedent bands to sign one of their recording contracts where the artists will get 75% of the profits after the expenses are recouped.

When was the last time that an artist got 75%? Ever? Let's hope this model pans out and creates some quality music that will make it into the big leagues. The only way to break the RIAA cartel is to simply put it out of business.
